Trezor® Hardware Wallet | Getting Started — Trezor™ Official Setup Guide | Secure Cold Storage
OFFICIAL GETTING STARTED GUIDE

OWN YOUR
DATA.

Welcome to the **Trezor® Hardware Wallet** ecosystem. This guide is your verified pathway to setting up the original cold storage solution. Secure your Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of digital assets using **Trezor Suite**.

START SETUP
01

Unboxing & Hologram Verification

Security begins before you even plug in your **Trezor Hardware Wallet**. The packaging for both the **Trezor Model T** and **Trezor Safe 3** is protected by a tamper-evident hologram seal.

  • Check the hologram for glue residue or tearing.
  • Ensure the box is glued shut effectively.
  • If the seal looks broken, contact Trezor Support immediately. Do not use the device.

This physical security layer guarantees that your **Cold Storage** device has not been intercepted or modified (a "supply chain attack") before reaching your hands.

02

Install **Trezor Suite**

Your **Hardware Wallet** requires a bridge to communicate with the blockchain. **Trezor Suite** is the official, open-source desktop and web application designed for this purpose.

Navigate to the official Trezor start page (trezor.io/start) to download the correct version for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux). **Trezor Suite** provides a user-friendly interface to manage your portfolio, buy crypto, exchange assets, and sign transactions securely. It replaces the older web wallet interface, offering enhanced privacy features like Tor integration and Coinjoin.

03

Firmware Installation

Upon connecting your device to **Trezor Suite**, you will be prompted to install the latest firmware. **Trezor devices ship without firmware pre-installed.**

This is a critical security feature. By installing the firmware yourself during the **Getting Started** process, you ensure that the software running on your device is the latest, official version signed by SatoshiLabs. Wait for the installation to complete and the device to reboot.

04

The Recovery Seed Backup

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP.

Your **Trezor Hardware Wallet** will generate a unique **Recovery Seed** (12 to 24 words). This seed is the master key to all your digital assets.

Standard Backup

A single list of 12 or 24 words. Used by Trezor Model One and Safe 3.

Shamir Backup (Model T)

Split your seed into multiple unique shares (e.g., 2 of 3 needed to recover). Increased security against physical loss.

WARNING: Never take a photo of your seed. Never type it into a computer. Never save it to the cloud. Write it down on the provided cards and store it in a fireproof location.

05

PIN & Passphrase

Set a strong **PIN Code** to protect your device from unauthorized physical access. The numbers on the device screen will shuffle, requiring you to map them on your computer screen (a security measure against keyloggers).

For advanced users, enable the **Passphrase** feature (often called the "25th word"). This creates a hidden wallet. Even if someone has your seed, they cannot access your funds without this user-defined passphrase.

Market Comparison & Resources

Smart investors compare their options. While **Trezor** is the original hardware wallet, users often research the ecosystem. Below are official resources for alternative platforms for your due diligence.

Why Choose Trezor Hardware Wallets?

Trezor invented the hardware wallet industry. By choosing a **Trezor Model T** or **Trezor Safe 3**, you are opting for open-source security. Unlike competitors who use closed-source Secure Element chips with proprietary firmware, Trezor's code is fully auditable by security researchers worldwide. This transparency builds trust. **Trezor Suite** further enhances this by providing a clean, private environment to manage your Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and thousands of ERC-20 tokens.

Whether you are holding for the long term (HODLing) or actively trading, the **Getting Started** process ensures that you are the sole custodian of your wealth. The combination of offline key generation, PIN protection, and optional Passphrase encryption makes the **Trezor Hardware Wallet** a fortress against digital theft. Always remember: Not your keys, not your coins.
